Ina has been working for years as a guide and product construction expert at a national tour operator specializing in outdoor hiking.
In a normal year they expect almost 2000 foreign tourists every year who spend 8 to 12 days in Albania. During 2020 they had no revenue from bookings as they were canceled 100% but they found ideas for new markets and focused on innovation. It was an experience that, according to her, put the main operators in search of collaborations with the local community, attention to rural areas, marking of new paths and supporting investments in the village.
“It was a year where many tour operators suspended their work if they did not close it temporarily or permanently, especially for guides, it was difficult because it is an independent profession and you can not rely anywhere. At least we had the space to see new spaces to invest in methods how the market can develop or to create new tourist packages. This year we received even more support for tour operators and guides to go out on the field and discover innovations. ”
In a way, the operators did not wait for what could happen but focused on changing the supply, considering the demand coming from the international market. Thus only in the South in the area between Përmet and Erseka, Zagoria, Lunxhëria, Kurvelesh, coastal highlands are included within the adventure offer dozens of new inns and many products in trekking (marching), bicycle tours, camping, horse tours, and experiences of living as area residents.
“We have established contacts with interested people who have started investing in their home and are interested in the training we have offered and are now waiting only for tourists.”
8 Albanian tour operators specialized in experience and adventure tourism supported by a program of the Swiss government have spent almost 21 thousand euros each for innovation and creation of new products, an investment that companies expect to receive in the top two years after market entry of packages. A study conducted by the same program shows that although the forecasts for 2021 remain bleak, the reopening will find adventure tourism with a much better offer than at the beginning of the pandemic.
