Afghan presenters and other journalists appeared on Afghan television on Sunday with their faces covered, following a Taliban order for such appearances.
Earlier this month, the supreme leader of the Taliban, Hibatullah Akhundzada, issued a decree ordering women to fully cover their faces in public, citing the burqa as the ideal dress.
On May 21, the Minister for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vices issued the same order to women appearing on television. The women initially challenged the decision by airing Saturday without cover.
However, on May 22, the female presenters were seen wearing hijab and only their eyes were seen.
“We have resisted and are against putting on masks. But TOLO News has been under pressure and we have been forced to put it down”, said TOLO News television presenter Sonia Niazi for the AFP news agency. A ministry spokesman said authorities were not against female presenters.
Since taking control in August last year, the Taliban have issued a number of decrees restricting the rights of women and girls.
They were forbidden to go out on the streets without a male family member, and were prevented from high school./REL
