Albania opened its doors late last August in the name of humanity, harboring more than 3,000 Afghan citizens to escape the repression of the Taliban who took control of Afghanistan.
This action of the Albanian government received thanks and appreciation from the US administration.
Initially, the Afghan friends took refuge in the student city of Tirana and then in a hotel complex in Shengjin, Lezha.
After seven months in our country, Afghan citizens are relocating to pursue their new lives in the US.
Under tight security measures at midnight on Monday, at Mother Teresa Airport through a charter plane 212 Afghan citizens left Albania. Shortly before leaving, the Albanian Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka said that today our friends are leaving, expressing the hope that they are leaving with a good memory for this country, for Albania, for its people.
“I remember it was just a few days ago when you came and we welcomed you for the first time in this country. I have to say, that today I have really mixed feelings, on the one hand, I am very happy for each of you, I know that this is what you wanted, that this is what you dreamed of and I am very happy that this dream was realized and to some extent, it was realized even faster than we dared to hope “, said Xhaçka.
Ambassador Yuri Kim, who together with Prime Minister Rama led the operation to bring Afghans to Albania, said that “we are happy that none of us surrendered.
“I will never forget the night you arrived here and came for several nights in a row. It was a bright moment in those dark days. We were really honored to be able to help you in such a small way to get through this very difficult period. Albania, as you know, was the first country to stand up and say: We will help. Our doors are open. Come to us. “On behalf of all Americans, I want to wish you a safe journey into your new home and your new future.”
Shengjin will continue to be a refuge for the remaining Afghans for some time to come. Besides America, some others will go to Canada.
“Yes, I have applied and I will go to Canada in 15 days. Albania is very good. We had a very good experience, there are beautiful times and wonderful people. “I love Albanians.” tha M.Taqi Safari.
The Albanian hospitality of these Afghan citizens will be replaced by the reception of Ukrainians in need of a safe haven, which Albania has begun to do.
