The Israelis are buying old Nokia phones because they are afraid of being eavesdropped on. Israeli mobile phone maker Nokia has said there has been a 200 percent increase in sales of old-fashioned phones over the past week, as Israelis do not want to eavesdrop on sophisticated mobile phones.
This mobilization came after they were informed that the police were monitoring a large number of citizens. Simple cell phones or those that are not part of what is called smartphones, have limited internet access and applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, a fact that makes them more secure from eavesdropping.
Cell phones of senior officials, activists, journalists, as well as family members and advisers to former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were also monitored by police. As a result, 4,000 old Nokia models were sold within a week.
