In Northern Macedonia, the first cases of the African Swine Fever outbreak have been confirmed.
Veterinary epidemiologist, Kujtim Mersini says that this disease can come very soon to pig stables in Albania. If disease prevention does not happen in time, farmers risk losing the entire population of pigs they have in the stable.
Kujtim Mersini: African Swine Fever is an effective disease affecting domestic and wild pigs. The problem is that in the domestic pig population there is a very high mortality rate which means that it warms the whole herd of pigs and causes massive damage to the economy.
The disease is near us as it has appeared in Northern Macedonia which means that we should increase vigilance as veterinarians, but also pig breeders should be careful if they have in the stable that the pigs suffer an immediate heat scan no signs, and pigs which in their body appear hematomas ie cat marks. The farmer must then notify the veterinary service immediately through the green number provided by the Veterinary and Plant Protection Authority.
The number one carriers of this disease are feral pigs, which is why veterinary epidemiologists recommend pig breeders not to leave the livestock in the pastures, but to give it food in the stable.
Kujtim Mersini: If such a warm animal is found none of these animals should be taken off the farm or sold in the market. So we will have a farm quarantine.
Caution Pork affected by African plague is not recommended to be consumed, therefore MAD infected pigs are eliminated and buried by veterinarians.
Kujtim Mersini: Fortunately, this disease is not zonal, which means it does not affect humans, but only pigs until the whole herd dies, but the meat is not qualitative because there are hematomas in the body, which means internal bleeding.
