After the United States, NATO also confirms that it expects a comprehensive attack by the Russian army on Ukraine soon.
The head of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, told the German television program Tagesthemen that “all indications are that Russia is planning a large-scale attack on Ukraine.” “Russian troops are not withdrawing,” he said.
“New Russian troops are being added there.” There are also signs that Russia is preparing to stage any pretext for a military strike on Ukraine, were his comments. In eastern Ukraine, ceasefire violations are being reported more and more every day, while “false allegations” of “genocide” in the Donbas and the evacuation of the population from separatist-held areas are “worrying signs,” Stoltenberg said. When Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelensky called for more sincerity in statements about his country’s NATO membership, Stoltenberg responded:
“We are helping Ukraine strengthen its defense capabilities. We are providing training and equipment and helping its Euro-Atlantic integration. ” NATO membership is possible, but the final decision must be made by the 30 member states. At the moment it is less about Ukraine’s membership in NATO and more about “accepting or not the efforts of a great power like Russia to dictate to another country what it can and cannot do – by force.” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says the situation should be taken seriously, as Russia has never before deployed so many troops on the border with the neighboring country.
