As 1.7 million children face a hunger crisis in the Cape of Africa, aid supplements like peanut butter could be a lifesaver, international aid agencies say, according to the AFP network.
The UNICEF group says the price of these ‘therapeutic foods’ has increased since the war in Ukraine has caused a general increase in prices.
The footage shows malnourished African children receiving the small ready-to-eat peanut butter confections as they are then measured and vaccinated.
UNICEF says it buys about 45,000 tons of such food aid a year, and that it is beginning to feel the brunt of the prices.
Aripokiru Nakuxhan, mother of six children, tells about the poor state of food in the region.
“We are hungry because there is no food, we only ate wild fruits because we have no cattle, we have nothing,” she says.
“We depend only on the Edung trees where we collect wild berries, crush them, cook them and eat them, this is our food.”
Local aid coordinator James Jarso said peanut butter confections can save lives in conditions of extreme hunger.
