The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj received in his office the Olympic team that will represent us in the winter games in Beijing. Linking the situation with the current debate with the AFF, Veliaj recalled that the Albanian Olympic Committee was previously closed, young people were not accepted and cooperation was not allowed, and today, after its opening, things have changed.
“I remember the quarrels with the head chair of the Olympic Community. Even weightlifting had turned into a bunker. But, Here we are today! A battle that seems impossible, when society is mobilized, the situation is unlocked. We now have an open Olympic Community, which finances and is funded, so it manages to raise funds from both the government and the municipalities. We have a Municipality that is all made available to athletes, so this latest debate on football is not only my personal debate, as a shareholder of FK Tirana, or as the main financier of sports in Tirana with sports fields, but it is also a debate of our society “, said Veliaj.
The mayor underlined that today’s battle with the Albanian Football Federation is taking place precisely so that the talents in football, like the talented 18-year-old skier, Deni Hoxha, who will represent Albania in the Winter Games, have the opportunity to shine.
“It is proven that when the game opens, when the bunkers are unlocked, when there is’ fair play ‘, when you know who the delegates are to vote, we have new talents like Deni – to whom no one has said’ pay 100 thousand euros to be part of the Olympic team ‘- this should not happen in football either. If we have young people like Danny, who want to play football and are the best, they should be given the chance to wear the red and black jersey without going through these banal ugliness that we have been hearing from for 20 years. The example of the Albanian Olympic Community is in fact the ideal example of what happens when there is positive energy, when the game opens, when there is ‘fair play’, when there is competition, when the best wins, when everything is transparent and when young people, not only they are not required to pay the tribute, but on the contrary, what can we do to make you shine, because when you shine, the whole society shines and the whole of Albania is better “, said Veliaj.
The President of the Olympic Committee, Fidel Ylli, thanked the Mayor for the special support he gives to the sport.
“As President of the Olympic Committee, I am very pleased that Albania will participate in the Winter Games. The Ski Federation and especially the President, together with the secretary, have done an extraordinary job in the Italian Alps, setting up the Albanian team. “I thank the Mayor who, even in this case, stands by the sport, the Albanian sports elite not only the summer teams, but also the winter teams like this, that an 18-year-old will represent Albania with dignity in the Beijing 2022 games”, concluded Ylli.
