16 years after the signing of the Stabilization-Association agreement, Albania opened negotiations for membership with the European Union today. At the first intergovernmental conference, held in Brussels, the head of the government, Edi Rama, considered the membership in the EU, a matter of ‘life or death’, while he stated that the country will continue to meet the challenges.
Among other things, Rama also focused on the cyber attack on government systems, for which he said that we are being attacked by a country hostile to the EU.
“We managed to prove that we were better and stronger. It is not only about us, it is about the European future. The EU has been more than reports or documents. Our search for Europe would have turned into an uninspiring job, if it didn’t happen, it is a matter of life and death for the Albanian nation. Although they were unfairly delayed for three years, we continued even more persistently.
Today, Albania is the most advanced country in the region, but the foundations for a justice system that can finally be trusted after centuries. We destroyed the old palace of corrupt justice. SPAK and BKH are essential in this new era. If a few years ago, you could have asked someone about a politician behind bars, they would have laughed at you. Today no one has immunity. Equality before justice is possible and achievable.
I stand here as the leader of a majority, democratically elected, that has not protected anyone from justice. Of course many shadows of the past linger, that is why we are here.
We join the US as a bearer of the war in Ukraine, we will continue to play a key role in the new geopolitical configuration. We follow a consistent path with the EU from 2014, on foreign policy. We initiated the Balkan initiative called Open Balkan.
I want to remember that it will not be only 2 but 4 out of 6 Balkan countries. In an area like the Balkans, it means fewer ghosts from history in our political life. Being 4 countries to join the EU, the spirit of division is halved. Despite the disappointments, the EU is not a project that will end one day. Aid after the earthquake, during the pandemic, investments have played a role for our country. Our economic position should be commensurate with EU member states.
We will engage in transport action plans and to expand green lanes. We will invest in national and regional interconnection. On the other hand, we want to become the regional champion of the digital age. As we speak, we are fighting against a cyber attack, from a country hostile to the EU, but our system is resisting. We will not only continue to report periodically, but we will find ways to increase the quality.
At the same time, we will work on the challenges and opportunities for EU membership. As we celebrate with enthusiasm today, we have never been more aware of the challenges. Many Europeans should understand that the EU needs the Balkans as much as the Balkans need the EU. Many who do not understand what motivated the project should see it now. A renewed Europe is needed. Yes, it is a constant struggle: The struggle itself to the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart.” said Rama.
