Albanian police in cooperation with SHISH, are investigating a case which they suspect is radio espionage that may be related to Russia.
The news was made by the British media Daily Record where it is said that a radio fanatic has shown how the Albanian police seized the equipment as it is suspected that he was a spy.
Colin McGowan, from Stenhousemuir, was asked about the radio equipment he had with him while visiting Albania last month, which was sent to the Albanian Crime Laboratory for further examination.

Unit C (Cyber Unit) of the Albanian Police, assisted by the Albanian secret service (SHISH), is liaising with prosecutors in the country to prove that Colin is the innocent amateur radio enthusiast he claims to be. They want to prove whether Colin was part of an espionage team during a five-day trip to the Eastern European country last month.
“I can assure you I was not spying. I’m not entirely sure what espionage might involve to be honest and would not know where to start. All this was a bit surprising, but I believe that the Albanian authorities, the lack of experience or knowledge of amateur radio is what caused this. “They just did not see equipment like ours and wanted to make sure everything was on top,” said Colin, 46.
Colin and Paul, 61, made a field trip to the Albanian capital, Tirana, to set up a new radio station that would broadcast their signal worldwide.
They rented a villa and set up a wired antenna to transmit information.
“We had some very successful days and everything went according to plan. On the way home, the Albanian customs officer saw our equipment and was interested, so we explained what it was. The next thing we knew, the police wanted to ask us more questions, so we stepped aside and asked us to explain what everything did. I think there was a concern that our things might interfere with the signals given by the Albanian police or government, but we operate on different frequencies, so there was never any chance of any kind of problem. They finally removed our equipment and still have it, three weeks later. I know they have been in contact with the Fiscal Prosecutor in Scotland and I hope this helps to clarify things and return our equipment to us.“- said Colin
He added: “I am aware that the Albanians launched an investigation, but let us return to Scotland. There really is not so much to ask. It was not so traumatic and we left the police in fairly good condition. “We were never formally arrested or detained.”
Eduart Merkaj, the head of the Border Police of Rinas, told ABC News: “The device was captured by a scanner and investigations are underway on this issue. Albanian police do not provide further details due to sensitive investigations. The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office is continuing the investigation. It is the first time that such a device is seized by the border police forces at Mother Teresa Airport “.
“Albanian police sources are reported to have said that they are concerned about how such a device entered Albania without being detected and for what purpose it was used and who used it and for how long this radio was used in the territory of Albania”.
Sources in the country said investigators are trying to determine if the radio equipment was able to record or interfere with analog radio waves used by the military or secret service.
The main concern of the Albanian intelligence agencies is espionage from Russia.
