An Al-Jazeera television journalist was shot dead while covering an Israeli raid on the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on May 11, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
Shireen Abu Akleh, a well-known Palestinian journalist who worked for the Arabic language channel of this television, was shot and later died.
A Palestinian journalist who worked for Al-Quds newspaper was also injured, but is in stable condition.
Al-Quds, the Qatari-based newspaper, blamed Israel for the case.
The Israeli army said its forces were the target of gun and explosive attacks while conducting an operation in Yenin, and then they returned fire. The military says it is “investigating the incident and looking into the possibility that journalists may have been shot by Palestinian assailants.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said the journalist’s death was sad news and added that he had proposed to the Palestinian Authority to conduct a pathological investigation into the journalist’s death.
“Journalists must be protected in conflict zones and we all have a responsibility to understand the truth,” he wrote on Twitter.
