Albanian and French archaeologists have resumed archeological excavations to shed light on the urban developments of the ancient city of Durres.
After a 2-year break due to the pandemic, the Albanian-French expedition has returned to the Byzantine Forum to find underground the earliest evidence of the city’s development. The Albanian co-leader of this expedition, archaeologist Eduard Shehi, shows that the excavations aim to descend to the heart of the city’s origin to understand the chronological evolution from antiquity to the construction of the Byzantine Forum dating back to the V-VI centuries AD and is built in the traditional center of ancient Dyrrah.
”We aim to understand what happened before its construction. Why was the Forum built here? What use did the territory have before its construction and how was it passed from one structure to another? Moving from a public to a private space to understand the totality of using the city center to create a general idea about ancient Durrës “says archaeologist Eduard Shehi.
With the launch of the expedition on the “topography of Epidamn-Dyrrachion” the first discoveries came to light.
‘‘The traces we have discovered are what is left of the excavations of the late 1980s. It is about the final remains of 2-3 graves that are almost damaged in their entirety “explains Shehi.
It is still early to determine the period, it is thought that the bones found belong to the inhabitants of late antiquity, or the early Middle Ages. Based on past expeditions, details are expected from this expedition of the planimetric development of the buildings of the Roman period that have been previously discovered here, dating the construction phases, yes and those of the destruction that the ancient city has suffered. The month-long expedition has just begun and the Albanian and French archaeologists of the University of Lyon do not yet know what this terrain will offer them in relation to the ancient civilization along the Adriatic.
