The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres said the agreement signed by Russia, Ukraine, the UN and Turkey is a “beacon of hope” in the war.
The deal, which representatives from all sides have just signed in Istanbul, means Russia agrees to a ceasefire to allow grain exports.
Turkey will inspect the ships to make sure they are not carrying weapons.
It is considered a diplomatic victory in the war, which is now entering its sixth month.
But Guterres added that the deal “didn’t come easy… it’s been a long road.”
