The Armenian government on December 30 lifted the ban on imports of products from Turkey, a decision imposed after Ankara backed Azerbaijan in last year’s war with Armenia.
During the fall of 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a six-week war over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. As a result of the fighting 6,500 people died, while Russia mediated the ceasefire.
“It has been decided that the embargo on the import of Turkish products will end,” the Armenian Ministry of Economy announced.
The decision will take effect from January 1, 2022.
The six-month ban on the import of Turkish products to Armenia entered into force on December 31, 2020 and was extended for another six months in June.
The lifting of the ban should now create better conditions for the export of Armenian products as well. According to the Armenian Ministry of Economy, the ban had both positive and negative effects.
However, Turkey and Armenia have already announced the appointment of special envoys to normalize relations between the two countries.
As early as 2009, Armenia and Turkey had signed an agreement on normalization of relations, which should affect the opening of borders between the two countries, but this agreement was never ratified./REL
