After an epic 5-month journey, teenage pilot Zara Rutherford successfully landed in Belgium becoming the youngest female to fly alone around the world.
Rutherford landed safely in the town of Kortrijk, 90 kilometers west of Brussels – the same airport from where it started its journey last August. At the age of 19, the British-Belgian pilot is 11 years and 11 months younger than American Shaesta Waiz, who was 30 when she set the existing record for the youngest woman to take a solo trip around the world in 2017.
“I did not see many female pilots, and I always thought it was really discouraging,” Zara told reporters waiting for her on the ground. “In this way, I hope to encourage more girls to love aviation,” she added.
Rutherford’s route around the world took him through Iceland to Greenland, east to Canada, and the U.S. through Central America to Colombia, and then back north to Alaska. It flew over Russia, Korea, Indonesia and India towards the Middle East before returning to Europe with its Shark Aero aircraft, which is designed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and can reach speeds of 295 kilometers per hour.
The biggest problems during her flight, the young pilot says she encountered with the severe Russian cold and the narrow airspace of North Korea.
