Brittney Griner, the American basketball superstar, has written to US President Joe Biden, pleading for help.
Griner has been detained in Russia for more than four months on drug charges by Russia.
In the letter that arrived at the White House on Monday, she wrote of fears that she may never return to American soil.
Government officials have confirmed they have received communication from the Phoenix Mercury player.
“President Biden has been clear about the need to release all American citizens held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad, including Brittney Griner.” a spokeswoman from the National Security Council said Monday.
Top Albania Radio writes that US authorities also reiterated that they are working hard using every means available to bring him home.
