The recent unrest in Montenegro has not left the European Union indifferent.
From the moment the motion of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic was announced, accusations between the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister began, street protests and finally the proposal to dismiss the Speaker of Parliament, Aleksa Becic.
Amid tensions, the head of the EU Delegation in Podgorica, Oana Kristina-Popa, called for a calm and resolution of the situation through mutual consultations and consensus.
“Montenegro has democratic legitimacy. It is a democratic state and should solve problems in state institutions, not on the streets“, Declared Popa.
Her call comes at the height of a political crisis sparked by a clash between Albanian Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic and Chief Executive Zdravko Krivokapic.
Who will win the war between them will be decided by parliament on February 3rd, but Abazovic’s hopes for a majority in the hall are heightened by the support of President Milo Djukanovic and his party. The day before, hundreds of citizens dissatisfied with the warning of the “Black on White” coalition to form a minority government, protested in Podgorica, Niksic and Berane.
Among them were pro-Serb extremists. The crowd gathered in front of the government building surrounded Abazovic and there were no clashes, no insulting words in his direction. “Traitor, you are a traitor“The protesters shouted as he replied: Look for betrayal elsewhere!
