Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has previously spoken about Russia and Ukraine, but also used the conflict as a clear warning to other countries about what China says is a threat.
“The Russian occupation was a wake-up call for Europe, but it is simply the ‘last example of an authoritarian regime seeking to challenge the status quo through threats and violence,'” Morrison said. Although he did not mention China directly, the context was clear: his government has, in fact, warned for years about the growing aggression of autocratic regimes.
“Western democracies should have opened their eyes and been united in their approach. “Things are now clear: the world is in danger of being reshaped by an ‘arc of autocracy’,” said Scot Morrison.
Morrison used the same language to describe Russia as well as China as nations that used “bullying and intimidation.”
Since 2017, Australia has expressed increasing concern about China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The Australian Prime Minister openly urged Beijing to join efforts to stop Moscow’s occupation of Ukraine. China, which has close ties to Russia, has refused to condemn the attack and has urged Western countries to respect what it calls Russia’s “legitimate” security concerns.
