An urgent call is being made for adventurous young Australians to work at the country’s Antarctic bases, with some of the posts offering big salaries for those who ‘like the cold’.
The Australian Antarctic Program announced today that it is looking for 12 expedition members as mechanics, communications technicians, cleaners, cooks with salaries ranging from $132,000 to $155,000 per year.
According to the announcement, work starts in October and is carried out at one of the country’s five Antarctic bases, in a mission that lasts just six months in a country where temperatures can drop to -57C in the coldest months.
Housing and food are free at the plants where real chefs prepare dining meals for the ice missionary staff.
Applications, according to the announcement, lasted until July 10, 2022.
The first round of Antarctic recruitment takes place in December, for the supposed ice drilling missions, where trains are supposed to be driven about 1,000 km into the ice, for the deepest and oldest areas to be dug.
All applicants will undergo detailed personal, medical and psychological fitness assessments prior to admission.
Mechanic salaries ranged from $77,477 plus a year to $63,437 in bonuses.
Communications technicians earned $83,375 a year and managers $92,076, both with a bonus of $63,437.
The station’s support roles included cooks, cleaners and storekeepers with salaries of $68,998, plus bonuses of $63,437.
