German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called on the international community to send a message to the Taliban that they are heading in the wrong direction.
“Our impact on what is happening inside Afghanistan is very limited. “It’s up to the Taliban to make rational decisions that are in their best interest, even though they are not doing so now.”said Bearbock during a visit to Islamabad, warning that Afghanistan could face a humanitarian catastrophe.
“It is not the fault of the Afghan people that their government has been overthrown by the Taliban.” she said on Tuesday at a joint conference with her Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Baerbock has said Germany and Pakistan have restructured their system to send Afghan refugees to Germany through Pakistan.
According to her, more than 14,000 Afghans, who have been particularly at risk, have been able to travel to Germany in recent months.
Since taking power last year as international troops wrapped up their mission in Afghanistan, the Taliban have vowed to lead differently than when they first came to power in 1990.
However, the international community has viewed these attitudes with reservations, saying that there has been a setback, especially in women’s rights.
