Thousands of Indians on Bali Island challenged the restrictions and flocked to the streets of the capital for the king’s glorious’s cremation ceremony.
The sophisticated ritual for King Anak Agung Manik Parasara, who died in late December at the age of 76, had started on January 2 and ended today.
Tourists and most local Hindus filled the streets of Denpasar for the traditional creaming ceremony known locally as “pelebon”.
Upon its completion it is believed that the spirit of the anointed reaches the exalted kingdom where it awaits the resurrection.
Members of the royal family paraded behind the gold tents, while dozens of men in traditional dress carried the king’s body to a 10m high tower.
The procession was accompanied by the statue of the demon Ogoh Ogoh.
The remains of King Parasara after cremation will be dumped into the sea.
Parasara was known as a spiritual leader and defender of religious tolerance.
But in 2004 he was convicted of stabbing his brother to death by his stepmother.
He was released after spending 1 year in Kerobokan prison in Bali.
