The Balkan route is again the most preferred for the illegal crossing of illegal immigrants into the EU, according to new data from the European border agency, Frontex.
The number of irregular inflows into Europe turns out to have increased by 82% during the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year. Half of these crossings, or 40,675 illegal entrances, came through the Western Balkans route.
“The main nationalities of immigrants who have followed this path include Syrians and Afghans. “Many of the discovered people have been in the region for some time before seeking to join the EU,” Frontex said.
Illegal crossings have also been added along the Eastern Mediterranean route. The number of departures to the English Channel to Great Britain has also increased by 122%, where the number of Albanian citizens marks a sharp increase since mid-April.
In 2021, the Balkan route was the second most used by illegal immigrants in Europe, with 61,735 such registered in one year. Current figures show that their number has increased drastically, and if the trend continues, the figures from a year ago will double.
A smuggler interviewed by Exit, EURACTIV’s media partner in 2021, explained how immigrants could pay for a “package” from Thessaloniki to Greece, cross the Albanian border and continue on to Kosovo.
Those taking this road would stop in Tirana for a day or two in a safe house before moving north.
