The chairman of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla on Tuesday was present at the session of the Constitutional Court where the request for the dismissal of President Ilir Meta is being discussed.
As a representative of the Assembly, Balla argued the decision to dismiss the President from office, emphasizing that the latter has carried out political activity and has damaged the image of the country.
“Meta has carried out political activity. Meta damaged the image of Albania. This is the first trial in history for a president to be tried. The dismissal procedure is necessary because of the equality of all before the law. Supported other political forces, incited violence and attacked constitutional institutions. The mobilization of this structure for the dismissal of the President is not problematic. The president holds office over the parties, but took an active part in the election. The Assembly does not intend to punish the president or the position, but the person who committed the violation. Can a president appear as a party to represent the unity of the people, incite violence, influence the decision-making of institutions, attack the constitutional court. The Constitution provides for the President to represent the unity of the people“, Said Balla.
In June last year, 104 deputies voted in favor of ousting President Meta. The Socialist majority blames him for public statements before and during the parliamentary election campaign, which according to the Socialists have violated the Constitution.
The vote was based on the findings of a report drafted by an investigative commission set up to investigate President Meta’s stance before and during the 2021 parliamentary election campaign.
Meta has considered illegal the decision to dismiss him. But through a post on his Facebook page this morning, the head of state announced that his lawyers will appear at the session of the Constitutional Court where the request of the parliament is expected to be considered.
