Palestinian worshipers performed the first prayer today at the Al-Khalidi Mosque in Gaza City as they begin the fasting holy month of Ramadan.
“We hope that this month will be good, peaceful and secure for the Palestinians,” said a Gaza resident, adding that “last year the month of Ramadan was full of war and destruction.”
Muslims had been preparing for the holy month for days by cleaning and decorating the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem with festive lanterns and ribbons.
“May Ramadan this year be peaceful and good, unlike last year,” said Fatima Diab, a resident of Jerusalem’s Old City.
The day comes after the bloody clashes of recent days where at least five were killed in protests by the Israeli army and two Israelis killed in an extremist attack in the north of the country.
As last year clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers led to bloody bombings in Gaza where at least 250 Palestinians and 12 people were killed by attacks in Israel.
