What has been talked about for a long time in the political circles of Tirana happened on the afternoon of May 19, 2021. A date which for Sali Berisha has been marked as the darkest in all his political career over 30 years.
As today 365 days ago, the US Secretary of State himself publicly declared Mr. Berisha as unwanted in the US.
The US State Department motivated the decision to declare Berisha ‘non grata’ with his family through a detailed explanation.
The US views the former Democratic president and prime minister as a politician involved in high-level corruption, misuse of public funds, interference in public processes and giving his political allies the opportunity to benefit.
Secretary Blinken’s decision produced a strong reaction from Sali Berisha, calling the decision as cooked up by his political opponents in Tirana, in collaboration with Soros.
He sought placement in a French court instead of the trampled dignity, as Berisha calls it, by suing Secretary Blinken. Today a year later, no one knows what is going on with that process.
This American decision followed with the request addressed to Lulzim Basha to expel Berisha from the PD parliamentary group. It must have been his last political start. But Basha’s move served Berisha in launching a campaign with strong anti-American doses, targeting Washington’s envoy to Tirana, Yuri Kim.
In fact, it was not the first time that Berisha was placed on a strong course of confrontation with America, which supported him in winning the first pluralist elections in 1992, the only ones won with merit by the DP. In a photo of Yuri Kim a few days ago in Washington, with some former US ambassadors, there were not a few who ended up as enemies of the doctor, Marisa Lino, Alex Arvizu, but also William Ryerson.
The American ambassador of 1992 strongly blessed the first victory of the Democrats in that year’s elections, which to this day turn out to be the only elections won purely by the Democrats.
But 30 years later, William Ryerson also shares a completely different opinion of the doctor of the ’90s, who promised to heal the wounds of communism but since May 19, 2021 was placed on the American black list.
“For me, this is a signal against corruption, not only for Albania, but that Washington will hit corruption every time it sees it, regardless of who it is about. What matters is what this, or that person, this, or that entity is doing now. Maybe 25-30 years ago they were not involved in corruption, but they were involved later and that is why it is now receiving so much attentionSaid Ambassador Ryerson.
Throughout his political career, Sali Berisha used American support for political interests on issues beyond his control, rather than part of Washington’s geostrategic interests, such as NATO membership or military intervention in Kosovo, but became hostile to the’s guardian. Albanian democracy how many times they have shown the red lines such as the massacred elections of 1996, the pyramid schemes, the killing of four protesters on January 21, and for more resistance and undermining justice reform.
Known as a politician with a strong character who seeks to win even when he is against the US, Berisha produced the strongest crisis within the DP since its inception. But also the most destructive disruption for the first anti-communist political formation in the country.
While Berisha is advancing in taking over the leadership of a PD for the Americans, there is no turning back. The decision is not reversed. The Americans turned their concern for Berisha into punishment. To date, the only punishment, as the new Albanian justice, 365 days after this decision, has made no apparent attempt to use American concern as an indication in favor of legal accountability by Berisha.
In one corner of Youth Park, in 32 years the symbolism has changed three times. A few meters further in 1990 some young people tried to add tritol to the statue of Stalin. Although the attempt failed, one morning the regime, in its final days, was forced to remove it itself. In 1992, one of the first private bars, Bar America, was erected on the site of the statue.
Today, in this country, is the monument of Independence, put on the 100th anniversary. Today, 110 years later, no one can deny that neither this monument, nor Albania itself could exist without the support of America. But great friendships, come with a bill. That of responsibility.
