Italy’s popular Prime Minister Mario Draghi has been boycotted by three of Italy’s main parties in his government’s vote of confidence in parliament.
The stab in the back for him came from the party led by Silvio Berlusconi and the extreme right of Matteo Salvini, who joined the Five Star Movement.
Although Draghi technically won the vote of confidence, he is not expected to declare victory after the boycott of the parties. Under these conditions, he is expected to resign and Italy will go to early elections.
His clearly expressed desire for the parliament was to lead a government that has the support of the majority of the parties behind, to be united and in unity in these crises for Italy.
Draghi’s resignation will bring problems for the EU as well. Italy is one of the countries with high public debt and among the most affected by the war in Ukraine due to the influence of Russian gas. Under these conditions, the fall of the government creates difficulties for the EU, which cannot act on a series of strong political decisions without the approval of one of the main members.
The “irresponsible” stance by the parties risked “creating a perfect storm”, EU Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said on Twitter, adding that Italy faces “difficult months ahead” but remains a nation of big.
The political crisis in Italy began with the withdrawal from the governing coalition of the Five Star Movement. And while Draghi submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella, it was rejected, with parliament having the final say on his fate.
