In response to the entry of Russian troops tonight into the separatist regions of Ukraine Lukansk and Donbas, the US, Britain and the EU have announced financial, economic and political sanctions against the individuals and entities involved.
In a recent statement, US President Joe Biden said further US sanctions would follow against what he called a “start to the occupation” of Ukraine.
His remarks echoed those of British Health Minister Sajid Javid, who had earlier said that “the invasion of Ukraine has begun.”
The European Union (EU) has announced tonight (Tuesday, February 22, 2022) sanctions against 351 members of the Russian Duma who voted in favor of recognizing the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
The bloc also decided to convict 27 individuals and entities accused of destabilizing Ukraine, waging a disinformation campaign and providing financial support to the two separatist regions.
The targets of the sanctions are the political, military, business and media sectors, which will be hit by asset freezes and travel bans, which means that people can not travel through EU territory.
