US President Joe Biden has overturned a decision by former President Donald Trump to block green card applicants from entering the United States.
Trump had made that stop last year, saying it is necessary to protect American workers in times of high unemployment, driven by the coronavirus.
This ban was planned to last until the end of 2020, but Trump has extended it until the end of March, in the last days he has been in power.
Most immigrant visas are blocked by this order, based on statements by immigration attorneys.
Immigrants could not get their family members unless they were U.S. citizens who applied for visas for spouses or children under the age of 21.
Immigrants with work visas also could not go to the US during this time unless they had health care skills and similar occupations.
According to the new decision, on February 24, Biden has suspended these decisions, saying that closing the doors to legal immigrants “is not in the interest of the United States.”
He has opposed Trump’s claims that immigrants could hurt the job market, saying the orders have prevented families from reuniting and hurt US businesses.
Biden, a Democrat, has vowed to reverse a host of Trump immigration policies.
He has previously rejected Trump’s decision to ban residents of Muslim-majority states.
