The United States will react decisively to an eventual Russian intervention and attempt to invade Ukraine, President Joe Biden said in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky.
During the conversation, Biden reiterated that the US supports Ukraine’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity”, said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
Volodymyr Selensky, for his part, hailed the “unwavering support” of the United States for his country. The Ukrainian president announced on Twitter that he had talked with the American president about a joint approach by the US, Ukraine and their partners – to “maintain peace in Europe” and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
In the telephone conversation, according to Psaki, Biden has stressed his support for diplomatic efforts to mitigate the conflict in Ukraine. Representatives of the US and Russian governments will meet in Geneva on January 9 and 10, in a bid to find a peaceful solution to the crisis. Consultations between Russia and NATO are scheduled to take place two days after the Geneva talks. Consultations between Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will follow on 13 January.

Before the conversation with the Ukrainian president, President Biden had also called the Russian president Vladimir Putin. Biden has strongly opposed the Russian occupation of Ukraine in this conversation as well. While Putin has warned the American president from imposing harsh sanctions on Russia.
A massive deployment of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine in recent weeks has fueled fears in Ukraine and the West that Moscow could intervene in the neighboring country, as it did in Crimea.
