President Joe Biden expressed confidence that the United States is on track to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, even though the state is facing an increase in cases, an increase that has been fueled by the Omicron variant.
White House officials have said the situation is different from previous stages of the pandemic, as more citizens are said to be receiving protection from vaccination and booster doses against the coronavirus.
“I am convinced we are on the right track,” Biden told reporters on January 11.
However, President Biden acknowledged that he was concerned about the pace at which the virus was spreading around the world because, he said, “the spread is not slowing down that much.”
While Omicroni does not appear to be causing serious illness, health officials have warned that rising infections could overwhelm hospitals. Some hospitals in the US have already suspended emergency interventions, because they are facing increasing number of patients and staff shortages.
On January 10, the US reported 1.35 million new cases of coronavirus, according to Reuters data. Meanwhile, over 136,000 people with coronavirus are hospitalized.
