According to experts in the field of medicine with high blood pressure is understood the pressure that the blood exerts on the arterial walls of a person. Doctors measure blood pressure at two points: when a person’s heart pumps and when the heart rests between beats. If a person has high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, he is at a greater risk of suffering a stroke or heart disease.

High blood pressure or hypertension can also damage the liver, eyes and brain. A person can maintain healthy blood pressure levels by reducing salt, eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption. During the pandemic many people did not follow these tips as it interrupted their routine immediately. Researchers in the US therefore did some research to see if this had any effect on blood pressure levels.

What did the study reveal?
The researchers found that before the pandemic there had been no significant change in blood pressure. But that changed during the pandemic! Blood pressure increased significantly in women and men of different ages. Dr. Luke Laffin, lead author of the study, said changes in diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption and not taking blood pressure medication may be the cause.

During the pandemic many patients were reluctant to visit, alcohol consumption increased and people did not perform enough physical activity. According to the study, changes and restrictions imposed in response to the pandemic have increased blood pressure. The effect is particularly large in women and there is also an unpredictable increase in young people. For many researchers and why this study is based in the US, it matters globally. And this could be an early warning signal that poor cardiovascular health could be a major problem in the future./AgroWeb
