One of the stars of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, ballerina Olga Smirnova, has left the company due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine and will instead dance for the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam.
Her move came shortly after St Petersburg-born Smirnova vehemently denounced the attack on the neighboring country, seemingly saying “here she filled the cup”. The Dutch National Ballet stated that the Russian star is “welcome with open arms in his ranks.
Smirnova joined Bolshoi in 2011, and soon took on leading roles in important shows such as “Swan Lake” and “Giselle”.
Since then, she has toured internationally with the prestigious theater ballet troupe, the big one has also performed as a guest for the American Ballet Theater and the State Ballet in Vienna.
But Smirnova, whose grandfather is Ukrainian, wrote in the Telegram that she is “against the war with all the strength of my soul.”
“I never thought I would be ashamed of Russia,” she said in a statement, which was later republished by the Dutch National Ballet.
“I have always been proud of the talented Russian people, of our cultural achievements and those of athletics. But now I feel that a line has not been crossed that should not be crossed. People are being killed, they are being forced to leave their homes. Who would have thought a few weeks ago that all this would happen? We can not remain indifferent to this global catastrophe“, She said.
