Boris Johnson has escaped the no-confidence motion after a majority of Conservative MPs decided to stay with the prime minister.
Boris Johnson will continue to be Britain’s prime minister, although his authority has plummeted.
211 lawmakers backed Prime Minister Johnson in the vote, while 148 voted against him.
“359 ballots were thrown, no ballots were damaged. “The vote in favor of Boris Johnson as leader is 211 votes and the vote against was 148 votes, so I can announce that the parliamentary party has confidence in him…”
The result means that Johnson secured the support of 59% of his lawmakers, lower than the support given to his predecessor Theresa May in a no-confidence vote she faced in 2018.
After scoring a landslide victory in 2019, the prime minister has been under increasing pressure as he and staff held alcohol parties at his office and residence on Downing Street when Britain was under strict Covid 19 blockades.
So great was the outrage that the party caused a Monday-like challenge, forcing a no-confidence motion against a leader who once seemed unquestionable.
His victory means that no other challenge can be raised against him within the party for a period of one year.
Since there was no prominent candidate to succeed him, most political observers had predicted that he would win the no-confidence vote.
But the very fact that his party supported holding the no-confidence vote is a sign of deep divisions among the Conservatives.
