Brandon Lewis has resigned as Northern Ireland secretary following Boris Johnson’s refusal to stand down, despite calls from some of his cabinet ministers.
“A decent and responsible government relies on honesty, integrity and mutual respect. It is a matter of deep personal regret that I must leave government as I no longer believe those values are being upheld. I have submitted my letter of resignation to the Prime Minister,” the secretary wrote on Twitter.
Lewis, who has been Northern Ireland secretary since 2020, was among the cabinet ministers who told Johnson on Wednesday that he should listen to the overwhelming majority of the Conservative Party and resign.
The number of resignations from the government’s payroll went this morning to 54, while a number of ministers demanded the resignation of the prime minister.
But a source told Sky News that Johnson has no intention of resigning, adding that the prime minister wants to “fight on”.
