EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell commented from Brussels on the first intergovernmental conference on Albania and northern Macedonia.
During the joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama and Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, Borell said that there is no date yet but he hopes that this conference will be held very soon.
“There is still no date for the first intergovernmental conference. We have expressed the desire for it to happen as soon as possible. So far we do not have a specific date, despite the fact that Albania has made a lot of progress. “Some member states are of the opinion that there is still a need for further progress before this conference is organized. I am confident that it will be organized very soon, as soon as possible,” Borell said.
For his part, Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke at length about Northern Macedonia, saying that the issue with Bulgaria should be resolved by historians, because according to him, if politics is included, the integration process for Northern Macedonia will take longer.
“Be it Albania or anyone in our region. We have done only one thing to do, to move forward so that institutions are built and citizens live in our countries with EU standards. Then the way or when we will do it will materialize in officially confirmed steps. Like the first conference, the second the third, This does not depend on us. We live in a time that is not the best for us.
When they were in their prime, it was not us. Today they are, we are not in the best of times. I was horrified when the identity-based discussion between Bulgaria and Macedonia started. I only hope that the wise leaders of Macedonia and Bulgaria will resolve this. A way must be found to agree with Bulgarian friends on what the past was. We are destined to be slaves of the past. If politics gets involved, I fear it will be another far-fetched process if it blocks Northern Macedonia. We are with you and if they tell us: You have made achievements but we have to wait for Northern Macedonia, there is no problem for us “, said Rama.
