Albania’s ranking in second place for the highest level of bribery in the world is an alarm bell.
This is the opinion of economics expert Zef Preçi, according to whom corruption is a losing battle of any government. “Corruption tax” he adds has curbed foreign investment and its costs fall directly on citizens.
“Bribery and corruption as a whole remain constant concerns of the business community. This is also the explanation for the modest presence of foreign direct investment from European Union countries. All costs are passed on to the final consumer and this makes the high prices of goods and services. “It is a fact that the concentration of decision-making in only a few hands and public funds in a minimal number of large businesses have worsened the business climate and competition, and this is the first victim of corruption along with the spread of informality.” says Zef Preçi, an expert on economics.
In addition to corruption, according to Preçi, the local and foreign business community faces many other acute problems that need to be addressed.
“Putting the justice system into operation is the most immediate need that business has today, as well as the problems related to the sustainability of the fiscal system, not to mention the problems related to land ownership. “Concentrating decision-making on just a few hands and public funds on a minimal number of large businesses has worsened the business climate and competition, and this is the first victim of corruption along with the spread of informality.”
Despite efforts to digitalize public services as a way to curb corruption, expert Preçi estimates that the reform has not been effective as it has reduced time, but not the costs of receiving services.
