Britain has announced new sanctions against many Russians, including family members of Russian oligarchs and the wife of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as leaders of two separatist regions in Ukraine.
A total of 206 Russian individuals, including 178 “separatists”, six oligarchs, collaborators and employees, and 22 others were added to the sanctions list through an “urgent procedure”, the British Foreign Office said on April 13.
The list included Alexander Ananchenko and Sergei Kozlov, whom the office described as “self-proclaimed prime minister and chairman of the government of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics” – Ukrainian territories recognized by Russia as independent and controlled by separatists backed by from Moscow.
Sanctions were also extended to Russian businessmen Pavel Ezubov, a cousin of Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, and Nigina Zairova, executive assistant to banker Mikhail Fridman.
Assets were also frozen at the wife of Russian Foreign Minister Maria Lavrova.
“After the horrific rocket attacks on civilians in eastern Ukraine, we are today sanctioning those who support the breakaway regions and are complicit in atrocities against the Ukrainian people,” said British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
The United States, Britain, the European Union and many of their allies have imposed sanctions on Moscow since it launched its occupation of Ukraine on February 24.
As evidence of atrocities mounts, sanctions have been tightened and expanded to push Russia to the negotiating table.
The British Foreign Office said in a statement that the sanctions imposed on Russia “have profound and detrimental consequences for Putin’s ability to wage war”, adding that Russia was heading for its deepest recession since the fall of the Union. Soviet./rel
