The photos of the couple who dreamed of opening a hotel at the foot of the Pyrenees, whose adventure turned into a tragedy, were published today by the British media, according to reports from financial difficulties.
French investigators believe that 64-year-old John Boyes, killed his wife Kathryn, 65, and then hanged himself at their home near Toulouse in southern France where they were planning to open a hostel for tourists.
The couple were found dead inside their home in Boudrac, the village with a population of several hundred residents, after their disturbed friends came to investigate when they had not heard from them for several days.
It is recently learned that the couple had bought the holiday home from a Dutch couple for ,000 200,000 last summer, in order to transform it into a holiday home.
They had spent the first time converting the family home into a guest reception area but the project appeared to have run into financial difficulties.
The couple looked polite as they worked in their home and garden, and often greeted neighbors as they walked their dogs in the surrounding fields.
The British daily Daily Mail writes that the financial failures of the business had caused John to become violent towards Kathryn before taking his own life, French investigators said.
Local prosecutor Christophe Amunzateguy confirmed: “It looks like a murder case. The woman had been dead for days with a rope around her neck. Wounds were also found on her body. “There were signs of strangulation and beatings.”
The gendarmerie also found John dead in the outer barn.
“He was found hanged and left a note,” said Amunzateguy, the Saint-Gaudens prosecutor.
He added: “The couple had planned to open a guest house but did not succeed due to financial difficulties. “There is no evidence of third parties involved.”
Their neighbor Yves Puissegur said: “The police told me that the desolate Kathryn had been killed by her husband. “He then went to a separate unit and hanged himself.”
Farmer Puissegur added: “I was told they had been dead for several days before the bodies were found. Their friends had come on Sunday to check as they could not contact them. They found Kathryn on the couch and called the gendarmerie. Authorities later found John in another building. “He had been there for two or three days.”
Another neighbor said, “They owed a lot of money to pay off the house.”
Investigations are ongoing.
