Russia will find it difficult to continue the military campaign, and Ukraine may activate a counterattack, British intelligence chief Richard Moore said.
Moore has said that Russia has faced “epic losses” in its initial war aims in Ukraine, such as: overthrowing the president, controlling Kiev and breaking unity within the West.
He spoke at the Aspen Forum in a rare public appearance.
Moore called the invasion “the most blatant act of aggression in Europe since World War II.”
He said that Russia’s recent victories are “small” and that this country risks losing energy.
“Our assessment is that the Russians will find it increasingly difficult to find manpower and material over the coming weeks,” Moore said during the conference in Colorado.
“They will have to take a break and this gives the opportunity to the Ukrainians to launch a counterattack.”
The British intelligence chief said that a kind of victory on the battlefield would constitute “an important message for all of Europe that this is a campaign that can be won”, especially before winter, when the pressure for gas supplies is expected to increase.
“We are in difficult times”, he said.
According to him, another reason why the support to the Ukrainians should be continued is because the leader of China, Xi Jinping “is watching like a hawk”.
“There is no information that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is sick”, he answered, when asked about the health of the Russian leader, being in line with the positions of his American counterpart, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). William Burns.
Moore has said that 400 Russian intelligence officials who have been operating covertly have been expelled from Europe, halving Russia’s ability to spy on the continent.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
He calls the war a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions./Rel
