The British husband of a woman from Ukraine who had been trapped in her country, traveled with his car about 1800 km through Europe in the hope of rescuing her and her cat Lucky.
65-year-old Steve Lucas, from Magor in Wales, said he took his old Citroen vehicle when his wife from Kiev, Anastasia, told him she was stranded and too terrified to go to a shelter against the bombing.
She had remained in Ukraine as immigration rules in Britain were tightened, but Lucas says they will reunite soon after easing entry criteria for Ukrainians.
The 65-year-old says that he drove the car without stopping for 24 hours through France, Belgium, Germany and most of Poland, before stopping one night near the border, writes MailOnline .
On Sunday he had arrived in Ukraine where he now hopes to arrive in the western city of Lviv, where his wife has left.
Lucas, who works with flooring and is also a part-time chef, said: “I told him to try to come from Poland a few weeks ago but he wanted to stay until Friday and things got worse.
“She sent me photos from the city where the flames were visible and said that her apartment was shaken by the explosions.”
Lucas added: “I advised her to put adhesives on the window panes so that they would not vibrate, she could not go to the shelter and stayed in her house.”
The couple were married when the Briton had been working in Ukraine five years ago but had to separate from him by immigration rules.
The man further tells the media: “I went and met once a month but when Covid came we could not see each other for almost a year. “Now I want to take him to Britain and I hope they do not stop me at the port of entry.”
