More than 60 cases of salmonella infection have been detected in the eggs of children ‘Kinder Surprise’ as a chocolate company has withdrawn all products in Britain out of health fears, writes the daily Metro.co.uk
All about 40 infected children were under the age of five.
The chocolate products company ‘Ferrero’ said their items were being called back as investigations continued to link the disease to the product, the local Food Standards Agency (FSA) reported.
No deaths were reported from the total of 63 cases dictated, nor is there any specific information on the condition of the patients.
Earlier the British authority said about 77% of the 57 reports of infection were under 5 years old, but the group could not confirm the information when contacted by Metro.co.uk network.
The products in question were 20g eggs or packages with three such eggs, all with expiration date from 11 July 2022 to 7 October 2022.
Ferrero has already withdrawn products that were produced in Belgium, and people are being advised not to consume them.
In a statement, the company explained: ‘Ferrero is cooperating with the British Food Agency and the authorities in Ireland on the possible link to a number of salmonella cases’.
“Although none of our Kinder products have tested positive for salmonella, and we have not received any complaints from customers, we are taking the issue very seriously as customer health is our priority.”
She added that all Kinder eggs were produced in the same factory, but other Ferrero products were not believed to have been affected by the infection.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever.
Although most cases heal within a few days, the symptoms can be severe and may require hospitalization for people with weakened immune systems.
Tina Potter, of the British health authority, said: “We welcome the approach of Ferrero manufacturers and advise customers not to consume the products listed in the notice.”
Dr Lesley Larkin, the authority’s supervisor, added: “Salmonella can be spread from person to person, so all those affected should practice good hygiene and avoid touching other people’s food if they have symptoms.”
