Popular British pop singer Craig David has said he feels “violated” by a campaign of harassment and persecution by a fan, who in turn told police he “wasn’t a threat” and that “Elvis Prestley has had even worse fans”.
The 41-year-old, known for his R&B beats, has been granted an order of protection by die-hard fan Tanya Jeal, 31.
Jeal reportedly stalked Craig from 2016 to 2021, knocking on his hotel room, coming to his house and sending letters to his parents.
In the statement read in court, the singer of the popular song ‘Seven Days’ said: “The whole series of incidents has left me feeling violated and disturbed in my home.”
He called Jeal ‘evil’ and added that he was left in awe.
David added: “I want to be able to walk down the street without turning my head back in fear. This woman is the only person who has made me feel this way in my entire life.”
“I’ve tried to come across as someone excited by me, but it escalated into something scary.”
Judge Sushil Kumar told Jeal: “You do not discuss any of your requests, such as contacting, sending letters or going to his hotel room.”
Jeal said for her part that some things ‘didn’t happen the way he told her’.
She added: “There is a video on YouTube of me and Mr. David claiming that he is ‘gay’.”
“Maybe if I had gone to his door as a man, he would have opened it. I know I should have thought about his sexuality before meeting him.”
Jeal even denied allegations that she would change her mind about David if she found out he wasn’t ‘gay’ or had a boyfriend.
“No, no, it would be a trick. I have never seen Mr. David with a girlfriend,” said the disappointed fan.
And in fact, the singer has often been the object of curiosity from the media for his undeclared sexuality.
Police officer Flora Curtis said Jeal first met David in 2016 when he came to a store to autograph sold-out albums.
But a few months later, Jeal went to his room at the Sofitel Hotel, knocked and took pictures with him, until he was escorted out by hotel security.
After several other adventures, she had knocked on the house of her “star”, threatening the cleaner who answered the phone, in case she did not talk or take pictures with the singer.
