The U.S. has stepped up sanctions against Russia and President Vladimir Putin following horrific images from the Ukrainian city of Bucha, announcing sanctions against Russian financial institutions as well as some people, Putin’s grown daughters and the wife and daughter of his foreign minister, Lavrov.
The administration is imposing full blocking sanctions on Putin’s daughters, Maria Putina and Katerina Tikhonova, the wife and daughter of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and members of Russia’s Security Council, including former President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
“Today we are dramatically escalating penalties by imposing full blocking sanctions on Russia’s largest financial institution, Sberbank, and its largest private bank, Alfa Bank, ”a senior administration official told reporters.
Sberbank holds nearly a third of the total assets of Russia’s banking sector, and the US has now blocked more than two thirds of the Russian banking sector.
“In line with the G7 and the EU, we are announcing a ban on new investments in Russia,” the official added.
The US has already sanctioned more than 140 oligarchs and members of their families and over 400 Russian government officials.
