The Bulgarian Parliament finally voted this Friday to lift the veto on northern Macedonia, automatically unblocking the integration process for both Skopje and Tirana.
With 170 votes in favor, 37 against, and 21 others abstaining, the Bulgarians put an end to their stubbornness after a four-hour discussion.
The word “shame” was repeatedly mentioned in the parliamentary session, which the day before was addressed to Bulgaria by Prime Minister Rama.
His statements provoked reactions among deputies of various groups in parliament, but in the end the majority decided to approve the French proposal and mandate the prime minister to lift the veto.
But in the meantime, Bulgarian Prime Minister Petkov resigned on Monday, and a new government will be formed in Sofia or new elections will be held.
Following the vote, Bulgarian opposition leader Boris Borisov telephoned Prime Minister Rama to announce the lifting of the veto.
“I just got a call from Boyko Borissov. I could not thank him enough for his good opinion that he called me, but I could thank him for his decisive role in removing the VETO in parliament! True friend, true leader. His GERB party and others saved the face of Bulgaria and the EU! “Now the EU must act quickly!”
Meanwhile, the second day of the European Council summit continues in Brussels. The call from Tirana is for the leaders of the European Union member states to take a decision to open membership talks with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
