Torrential rains caused extensive flooding and damage in Karachi, Pakistan.
Most of the underpasses were flooded, Sindh provincial chief minister Murad Ali Shah said. He said the three-hour rain brought 126 millimeters of water.
One death has been confirmed in the latest period of flooding, bringing the death toll to 29 since the start of June, according to CNN.
Karachi’s main streets, which house financial institutions and the headquarters of banks, including Pakistan’s central bank, were flooded and rescue teams are using boats to reach stranded people.
The Pakistan Navy is also participating in the relief and rescue operations.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic losses due to torrential rains in Karachi”, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Twitter. He offered all possible support to the Karachi administration.
The highway connecting the city of Quetta with Karachi was also closed as parts of it were swept away by floods.
In the southwestern province of Balochistan, about a dozen villages in Lasbela district were flooded after the Winder River overflowed and water rushed into houses.
The navy and local officials have rescued about 500 people and local administration from the affected villages so far, government official Farhan Suleman Ranjho said.
Last week 64 deaths occurred in different parts of Balochistan province after eight dams burst due to floods. Meteorologists predict more rain in the coming days.
