China has begun to apply the “zero-Covid strategy” by isolating entire cities after discovering some positive cases of coronavirus.
The new restrictions precede the Chinese New Year celebration and the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics and signal the concern of Chinese authorities about the risk of a new wave of infections.
As of midnight on Thursday, the city of Xi’an, which is located in central China and has more than 13 million inhabitants has been placed in isolation due to some positive cases of coronavirus.
After discovering only one case of coronavirus, the Chinese authorities put in isolation the city of Dongxing, which has a population of 200 thousand inhabitants.
In Xi’an, the capital of central China’s Shaanxi province, new measures were unveiled on Wednesday after 52 cases of coronavirus were detected. Last week, bars, cinemas and gyms were closed as a precaution while other businesses and public transport are now closed as well.
Citizens are forced to undergo massive tests and only one family member can leave the house, once every two days, to buy the necessary things.
Many flights were stopped from Xi’an city airport, which is also home to the “terracotta army”, where more than 6,000 sculptures of soldiers guard the tomb of Qin Shi, China’s first emperor.
