At a time when the world’s attention is focused on the tense situation in Ukraine, the Chinese threat reappears for Taiwan, which had recently fallen into calm.
Thirty-nine Chinese fighter jets flew to the island on Sunday. Among them were J-16 and J-10 bombers, said the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense. The Taiwan Air Force claimed to have lifted its planes into the sky to track down Chinese aircraft. China aircraft were also detected on radar.
The deployment of Chinese aircraft to Taiwan comes after the U.S. military said two of its warships were sailing in the South China Sea. The U.S. said the warships USS Carl Vinson and USS Abraham Lincoln were engaged in submarine and air strike operations and were on high alert.
This is the largest number of aircraft that China has launched to Taiwan this year. Taiwan and China had waged a civil war in 1949 and China claims that the island is its territory. Beijing has used diplomatic and military means to isolate the island and intimidate the island’s authorities, but the United States has continued to support Taiwan by selling it advanced weapons and fighter jets.
