North Korea has resumed rail freight with China after a two-year suspension by the coronavirus, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced yesterday.
Spokesman Zhao Lijian said that “after friendly consultations between the two sides” the railway between Dandong in China and Sinuiju in North Korea has reopened.
“Both sides will work to facilitate normal trade between the countries by guaranteeing the prevention and safety of the disease,” Zhao said when asked by reporters about reports of a train coming from North Korea in Dandong on the weekend.
The two countries had agreed in November to open their borders but reportedly gave up after discovering the increase in virus cases in Dandong.
The Dandong-Sinuiju Railway runs along the Yalu River and is the main trade route between China and North Korea, at a time when the latter was suffering from severe food shortages, medication and other spells from harsh US and UN economic sanctions. .
China is North Korea’s main supplier and accounts for 90 percent of the isolated country’s foreign trade.
Pyongyang, meanwhile, has closed its borders to all foreign visitors and flights, and even domestic travel has been restricted.
There are no official reports of coronavirus cases in North Korea but the country has rejected Western Covid-19 vaccines.
The Financial Times reported in November that satellite images showed the construction of several decontamination centers at customs points, indicating that the country was preparing for reopening to imports.
