Taiwan has said it has activated fighter jets as a warning sign for the 30 fighter jets China has sent to the country’s airspace.
This also marks the largest incursion since January.
These developments were reported after US President Joe Biden warned China against invading Taiwan.
China has intensified such actions in recent months, saying it is conducting military exercises.
But such actions have angered Taiwan and increased tensions in the region.
China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province, which it can seize by force if necessary.
Analysts have previously said that such incursions are a warning to the Taiwanese government not to take steps towards the official declaration of independence.
Relations between China and Taiwan
- Why do China and Taiwan have strained relations? China and Taiwan split during the 1940 civil war, but Beijing insists the island will be returned to it someday, albeit by force.
- How is Taiwan governed? The island has its own constitution, democratically elected leaders, and about 300,000 active military troops among the armed forces.
- Who knows Taiwan? Just a few states. The United States has no official ties to Taiwan, but has a law that provides for the island to have the means to defend itself.
