Beijing has warned Australia today to “act cautiously” or face “serious consequences” following accusations against Canberra of dangerous maneuvers and spy planes in the South China Sea.
“China again urges Australia to respect China’s national security and to avoid miscalculations that could result in serious misconduct,” said Zhao Lian, a spokesman.
Australia said of the incident in the skies of the South China Sea that it regularly conducts surveillance flights in the region.
Beijing insists the area is under its dominance even though the claim was rejected by a 2016 Hague ruling.
China’s stance has also increased tensions with the US navigating and flying in the area under the principle of freedom of navigation.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said yesterday that a Chinese J-16 fighter jet discovered the Australian P-8 surveillance aircraft with dangerous maneuvers against the Australian crew.
But Beijing said today that it would never allow another country to infringe on China’s sovereignty, “under the pretext of freedom of navigation.”
The incident comes two months after Australia accused the Chinese military of firing military laser beams at aircraft in waters near Australia, in what they called an “act of intimidation”.
Zhao said the Chinese military conducts its operations in a “safe, standard and professional” manner.
